There are many folk remedies to fight the common cold.  These are just a few of the proven ones.   This list is not all encompassing, but has a few good ones. 

Water

OK, this is not a supplement, but maybe the most important one.  Always remember to stay hydrated, most American are constantly dehydrated and therefore start out behind when sick.

Astragalus

A cold-fighting herb which contains certain chemicals that stimulate the virus-fighting cells of the immune system.

Echinacea

A recent study in the Annals of Internal Medicine shows that it can shorten the length of a cold by about ten percent. Another study showed that it was beneficial when taken along with vitamin C, selenium, and zinc.

Garlic

It contains a compound called, allicin, which could reduce by half the odds of developing a cold and speed up recovery. 

Goldenseal

It has antibacterial properties and is helpful for disorders affecting mucous membranes. It also has been shown to boost the immune system and a cold and flu fighter.

Zinc

A recent review of 13 trials, showed that zinc can reduce the duration and severity (by half) of a cold if they are taken within 24 hours of the first symptoms appearing.

Vitamin A

It is necessary to new cell growth which is needed to fight infection(Too much can be toxic so ask your doctor before starting or if pregnant.)

Vitamin C

A recent study showed those taking vitamin C were less likely to get a cold and recovered faster if infected. 

 

Before using supplements, it is always wise to consult your physician, especially if you are on any prescription medications.
